Art & Craft

The genesis of artistic expression lies in innumerable tangible and intangible impulses. Some have defined it as an expression of the soul. “Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures.” (Henry Ward Beecher). Some have described art in these terms, “It has been said that art is a tryst, for in the joy of it maker and beholder meet.”(Kojiro Tomita). Some demand the complete liberty of the credo of “Art for Art’s sake” while some view art as a catalyst of change. Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for truth.(Barbara Streisand). Some suggest that art is a mere representation or imitation of the world we see. Some consider art as the pathway to God and to salvation. No matter what the definition of art may be, evidently the artist, the work of art and the viewer who sees the work of art and interprets it, all form the three vertices of the triangle of the experience of art. We, at DPS, Secunderabad hope that the students of our school experience art and craft in all its dimensions.

The Department of Art & Craft aims at teaching students various art forms. It aims at familiarizing students with various kinds of mediums. Glass painting, pencil shading, pen drawing, collage work and mural painting are some of the work students learn while in school. They explore various mediums such as water colours, oils colours and acrylics. While students of Pre-Primary classes just dabble in the sheer wonder of colours, students of higher grades explore various facets of art such as life-studies, landscapes, or still life paintings.  The deluge of prizes that our students win in inter-school competitions clearly illustrates that the students have a good grasp over the subject. We follow an inter-disciplinary approach with classes in history spilling over into the domain of art and craft.

It might interest those who labor under the misconception that art is a rarified elitist pursuit to know of the far reaching advantages of art in terms of career options, be it in the realm of architecture or fashion designing  art director or as art teacher or ,of course, as a professional artist. Other potential careers include gaming, graphics, designing, animation, product designing, advertisements, landscaping and so on.

Students of art can paint the canvas of their lives in the colours of their choice!
